Will the New SAT Adversity Score Level the Playing Field?
Pros and Cons of the SAT Adversity Score

WHY DO YOU NEED HIGH SAT SCORES?

SAT scores are a great indicator of student success in college courses.  If your scores are high enough, you automatically become eligible to receive scholarship money.  When you are accepted to college, these scholarships can help you budget for your college tuition and expenses.   You also have a greater likelihood of landing the Ivy league school of your choice.

WHAT DO SAT SCORES MEAN?

Colleges look at student percentiles as a guide to awarding SAT scholarships and admissions.  SAT scores are taken from the 25th and 75th percentile of total scores that were achieved by the students at your high school.   Essentially, the percentile shows where the student’s SAT score lies along the range of scores received by examinees at your high school.  The 25th percentile score is the SAT score that only 25% of the students taking the SAT at your high school scored lower than.  The 75th percentile score is the SAT score that only 25% of students at your desired college scored higher than.   So, though you may have SAT scores above the 25th percentile, it may not be at the 75th percentile compared to the top 25% scores of students accepted into your desired college.  Looking at Duke University, for example, 25% of students achieved an SAT score lower than 1315, and 25% of students achieved an SAT score higher than 1570.  If your scores are average, 50% of the students at Duke score between 1315 and 1570 on the SAT.  Knowing the SAT scores of the top colleges will give you a good benchmark to measure your own scores by.   If you want to stand out, your SAT scores should be at the 75th percentile to ensure you get into your school of choice

HOW DO YOU FIND SCHOOLS THAT OFFER SAT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ABOVE AVERAGE SCORES?

Finding schools that offer SAT performance scholarships are not difficult to find.  If you have a computer or smart phone that can access the internet, a simple search will yield the required results.  Also, be sure to go directly to your desired college/university’s website to search the terms and required SAT scores for the scholarship.  You can also use your High School counselor as a resource to help you navigate the scholarship process.

WHAT ARE THE INDICATORS TO RECEIVING A COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE LETTER?

SAT scores in the 75th percentile or better, good GPA, extracurricular activities, parent alumni, and volunteer work are all indicators used by colleges to identify students who will succeed in their intellectual endeavors as well as excel in their future college courses.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THE SAT AND WHEN?

High School students who plan to attend a college or university must take the SAT or ACT.   Freshman and Sophomore students can begin preparation for the Preliminary SAT, by taking the right High school courses.  Juniors may take the PSAT to reveal exceptionalities in learning or the SAT to reveal any gaps in knowledge that require a course of study to improve scores.  Seniors who take the SATs in the same graduation year are at a higher risk of not achieving their desired scores because they have less time to retake the exam, if necessary, to meet the admissions deadline.   Therefore, it is recommended that Sophomores should take the PSAT in their last semester; Juniors should take the SAT in their last semester; Seniors must take the SAT no later than the first semester.  Keep in mind that scholarships and colleges have deadlines.  Researching the cutoff dates for SAT exams, SAT scholarships, and college admissions is a good idea to compare scholarship programs and colleges that interest you.  If you are well prepared, test early, you can determine what subjects to focus on to help you approach the SAT with confidence.
